Early Photos of New Zealand and Australia

Set of 41 early New Zealand photos taken by one of the earliest and most famous photography ateliers in New Zealand: Wheeler and Son.

Based out of Christchurch, New Zealand, Edmund Wheeler was a British migrant to the antipodes. He had already been a photographer for some time before arriving in NZ in 1863 with his son Edmund Richard Wheeler. The two operated one of the first photography studios in New Zealand and took pictures of the growing colony and neighbouring Australia.

Edmund Wheeler and Son of Colombo St., Christchurch, New Zealand was one of the very early photography studios in the antipodean islands. Opening in 1863 or 1864 by Edmund Wheeler (1800-1877,) his fame increased upon taking and selling portraits of then Governor Sir G. F. Bowen. His son, Edmund Richard Wheeler (1842-1933,) assisted his father and ran the business after the senior Wheeler's passing. In 1894, the junior Wheeler published a two-volume album of New Zealand's landscape called "The Imperial Album of New Zealand Scenery.)
